Established in 1961, the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge has been providing an excellent opportunity for individuals to view and appreciate the various types of birds, fish, and other creatures in Ottawa.
This wildlife refuge serves as a habitat for songbirds, shorebirds, and waterfowl such as the black ducks. According to the refuge’s staff, the best seasons to view the migrating birds are during spring and fall, when many types of birds stop and rest in the area. In addition, this refuge also gives its visitors a glimpse of the last remnants of the Great Black Swamp found in the Lake Erie marshes. Here they can see the different types of fish and other forms of water creatures. Visitors can also submit images which they have taken in the place a photo contest is being organized by the wildlife refuge staffs.
Moving on, with regard to recreation, this wildlife refuge presents an environment that is suitable for hiking and biking. Hunting enthusiasts may also hunt waterfowl and deer under a strictly controlled condition, and fishing can be done in designated areas only.
